IEB Class of 2024 Achieves Record Pass Rate

Published on

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) has announced a stellar 98.47% pass rate for the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations—the highest in five years.

Of the 16,304 candidates who sat for the exams, 89.37% achieved university entry qualifications, surpassing last year’s 88.59%.

The cohort included 14,990 full-time and 1,314 part-time students across 275 exam centres nationwide. Notably, nine new schools joined the IEB system in 2024, contributing to a significant growth in candidate numbers.

IEB CEO Confidence Dikgole praised the resilience of the Class of 2024, who faced the long-term impacts of COVID-19 during their early high school years.

“Their perseverance amid disruptions to foundational learning and adaptation to new modes of education has been exceptional.”

Inclusive Assessments and Technological Adaptations

The IEB says it has maintained its commitment to inclusive education, approving accommodations for 10.95% of candidates, including learners with hearing and visual impairments. Examination content was adapted to ensure fairness while preserving the integrity of assessments.

Technological advancements also played a role, with real-time video monitoring at 274 centres ensuring a secure examination process. Despite the ubiquity of technology, Dikgole highlighted challenges like shortened attention spans among learners, emphasizing the need for responsible tech use in education.

Umalusi Endorsement

Umalusi, South Africa’s education quality assurance body, endorsed the 2024 examinations, confirming compliance with national standards and the absence of systemic irregularities.

The IEB has encouraged students who fell short to explore alternative educational pathways. Applications for remarking close on January 31, 2025, with results expected by March 1.

The Matric pass rate from all public schools will be released by the Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube during a televised event on Monday 13 January at 6:00 p.m.
