A MyCiTi bus driver has been suspended and charged with reckless and negligent driver, following a multi-vehicle crash on the N2 highway on Sunday. The incident reportedly happened in the vicinity of Gugulethu.

Ten passengers were on board the vehicle and eight of them sustained injuries. They were hospitalised, and have since been discharged. While no children were inside the bus, two infants and a child were travelling in the private vehicle. The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas confirmed the incident:

“A MyCiTi bus travelling from Mitchell’s Plain to the (Cape Town) Civic Centre, on the N2 inbound, was involved in a crash on Sunday afternoon. The bus reportedly collided with a private vehicle, a highway patrol vehicle and an unoccupied traffic services vehicle. We can confirm that the driver of the MyCiTi bus has been charged with reckless and negligent driving, and has been suspended,” explained Quintas.

The cause of the road accident is still unclear.

“The investigation will determine the circumstances around this incident. As per the City’s contract with the vehicle operating company, an incident report must be submitted to the City. Furthermore, the South African Police Service will also conduct its own investigation,” said Quintas.

Questions posed to the South African Police Service remained unanswered by deadline.
