Cape Town Police have arrested one of their own yet again. This time, a constable based at Maitland’s 10111 Call Centre was caught with a prohibited gun with ammunition and narcotics, in Khayelitsha.

Western Cape Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says the arrest was conducted, after the Khayelitsha Tactical Response team followed up on a tip-off early on Wednesday. The operation led detectives to a home in Mandela Park, where officers seized a 9mm pistol and six ecstasy tablets. Swartbooi explained what transpired:

“The targeted operation saw the forces descending on the property in Kumande Bali Street at around 06:10. Upon entering the premises they searched the occupant, and the premises, which resulted in the detention of the 38-year-old constable,” said Swartbooi.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner Thembisile Patekile has emphasized that individuals who violate the law have no place in the South African Police Service. The officer will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court, once charged.

On Wednesday, eight other police officers also appeared in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court. They faced charges of extortion, business robbery and corruption. The officials allegedly extorted money from two Chinese-owned businesses in Milnerton.
