You can get free entry to the City’s nature reserves during the Great Southern BioBlitz, celebrating Heritage Month. The Great Southern Bioblitz weekend starts on Friday, 20 September and ends on Monday, 23 September. Citizens who take up this opportunity can use 4 days’ free entry to local nature reserves during the Bioblitz.

The Mother City is again participating in the yearly Great Southern Bioblitz challenge alongside other cities in the southern hemisphere. This is in support and efforts to record the local diversity of plant and animal life.

Celebrate our natural heritage

The City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews says the Great Southern Bioblitz is a citizen scientist event that takes place annually during springtime.

He says it’s aimed at encouraging people to record and identify wildlife in this hemisphere.

He added, “With a wide array of nature reserves, I am certain Cape Town will come out tops and I encourage residents to take along their smartphones or cameras and snap as many unique sightings as they can at the reserves.”

Andrews has encouraged people to take part. They can upload their nature observations onto the iNaturalist app.

“Much like the popular City Nature Challenge, cities in the southern hemisphere compete against each other to see who can record the widest range of plant and animal species during the challenge,” said Andrews.
