Detectives have made a breakthrough in the Deveney Nel murder case. Following an extensive investigation, a 17 year old boy was arrested on Friday night and charged with murder.

He will appear in the Caledon Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 August.

Earlier this week, police were tight lipped about their investigation, asking the public to avoid sharing “unsubstantiated allegations” about the incident.

Deveney’s body was discovered on the premises of the Overberg High School on 7 August, after her mother reported her missing.

She had failed to return home to Grabouw following a school sports day.

Serious violent crime detectives immediately launched an investigation, combing the crime scene for clues, and pursuing several leads.

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Thembisile Patekile has applauded the team on the breakthrough.

We will spare no resources in getting to the perpetrators of crime. Gender-based violence and femicide is a priority for the South African Police Service. Hence we welcome this arrest.
