A one-of-a-kind Museum of Dogs has opened its doors in Cape Town, offering a heartfelt tribute to our four-legged companions. Founded by 24-year-old Karel van der Vyver, the gallery was launched on July 27, 2024, as a celebration of all things canine.

A DIVERSE RANGE OF EXHIBITS

The museum features a diverse range of exhibitions, including ceramic art, photography, paintings, dog-themed films, canine-inspired music, and more. Whether you’re a fan of Bulldogs, Beagles, Great Danes, or Poodles, there’s something for every animal lover to enjoy.

“I think people don’t know what to expect. It has been really emotionally overwhelming for some people. I’ve seen a lot of people start crying when they read all the stories. There are also families who come after a dog has passed away, as a way to remember him or her,” said van der Vyver.

van der Vyver’s vision for the museum dates back five years, inspired by the passing of his aunt in 2018, who succumbed to cancer. He was deeply moved by the unwavering love and support his aunt received from her three dogs during her illness, which became the driving force behind this project.

“My aunt came to stay with us while she was undergoing cancer treatment and she came with her 3 dogs. Their relationship, in the toughest moments, was so special,” said the ambitious museum owner.

Although van der Vyver recently graduated with a Master’s degree in Law in February, he is fully committed to making the Museum of Dogs a success, having no desire to pursue a career as a practicing lawyer.

Describing himself as a zoophilist, van der Vyver explains that the museum serves as a sanctuary for those who have lost their beloved pets, as well as an outlet for anyone who wants to express how “man’s best friend” has impacted their lives.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Animal lovers are welcome to bring their pets along, provided they are kept on leashes.
