The convicted former police commander of the Claremont Police Station who murdered his three children, Marius van der Westhuizen can forget about packing his bags just yet.
van der Westhuizen was expected to be out on parole on Wednesday 31 July, but that will no longer be the case. On Thursday, the Department of Correctional Services issued a statement explaining that after studying the parole board’s report, his parole placement will be reviewed. Van Der Westhuizen has so far made three attempts to be granted parole.

He killed his children; his son aged 8, his 21-month-old daughter and his 16-year-old handicapped daughter back in 2006. Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo explained:
“DCS has studied the report of the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board (CSPB) on the parole placement of Marius van der Westhuizen and has directed that it be reviewed. This decision implies that the previously scheduled parole placement date of 31 July 2024 is now irrelevant as a review process is to be initiated following Section 77(1) of the Correctional Services Act, 111 of 1998,” said Nxumalo.

van der Westhuizen will remain behind bars at the Malmesbury correctional facility, where he is being held.
Last month, the civil rights organisation Action Society slammed the decision when news broke that parole was granted at the time.
