World reacts to Trump assassination attempt

President Cyril Ramaphosa has denounced the alleged assassination attempt on former United States President Donald Trump.

 

Trump, who is running for re-election as President, was shot in the ear while he was delivering a speech during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday.

 

A rally attendee was shot dead and two others were injured during the shooting.

 

The alleged shooter – who fired multiple shots towards the stage – was killed by US Secret Service personnel.

“The attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump is a stark reminder of the dangers of political extremism and intolerance. Political violence is the antithesis of democracy. I wish former President Trump a speedy recovery.

 

“We unequivocally denounce this political violence and earnestly hope that the citizens and leaders of America will have the fortitude and sagacity to reject violence and seek peaceful solutions,” President Ramaphosa said on social media platform, X.

 

US President Joe Biden, in his response to the assassination attempt, has said there is no place for this kind of violence in America.

 

“We as a nation must stand together as one and condemn it.”

Several world leaders condemned the assassination attempt.

 

A spokesman for António Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), described it as an “act of political violence”.

 

President Emmanuel Macron of France said the events were a tragedy for democracy.

 

The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said there is no place in society for any form of political violence. He said his thoughts are with all the victims.

 

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said political violence is never acceptable.

 

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also strongly condemned the incident and said that there is no place for violence in politics and democracy.

 

Trump took to his social media channel on Truth Social to thank his supporters for their “thoughts and prayers” after the attempt on his life.

 

He says it was God alone that prevented the unthinkable from happening. Trump says it is now more important than ever for the country to stand United.
