Tributes for young cyclist killed in tragic Sea Point accident

Published on

Tributes are pouring in for a young cyclist from Bonteheuwel who died in a tragic incident in Sea Point on Tuesday.

According to information, the 17 year old Calib de Kock, of the Phoenix Cycling Club, was out for a training ride in Sea Point on Tuesday morning when someone opened their car door, and he collided with it.

He later passed away from his injuries at Christiaan Barnard Hospital.

Sea Point ward councillor Nicola Jowell has extended her condolences to family, friends and team mates of Calib, describing it as a tragic accident that will be devastating for his family and so many affected by this.

She has also made an appeal to all road users, to be extra cautious.

”Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users, we need to please be extra cautious on the roads and take a moment to check and check again before opening a door, changing a lane, making a turn.”

Jowell says her thoughts are also with the driver of the vehicle who would ”do anything to get that split second back and will also be devastated by this incident.”

CEO of the Pedal Power Association Neil Robinson also urged cyclists to be more cautious on the road as well as motorists to be ”situationally aware.”

Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie says the community has been left with a deep sense of sadness after Calib’s senseless death.

”Calib De Kock loved his community, loved his family, and loved cycling. In a tragic bicycle accident, Caleb lost his life. However, his tenacity, his relentlessness, and his pursuit for success saw him overcome many challenges to pursue a sport that gave him life and joy.”

McKenzie also extended his deepest condolences to his family, his mom, the broader community, and the cycling fraternity.

Myriad Events, a Cape-based sports company that promotes Cycling and Running events, says Calib was a promising youngster who ”put his heart and soul into his cycling, and life in general.”
