The Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha has requested the public’s assistance to keep the township’s animals this winter, with its Wagging Winter shoebox drive.
Spokesperson for the clinic, Marcelle du Plessis explained that the facility is packed to the brim during the cold winter months as a result of hypothermia, and animals suffering injuries caused by reckless drivers. Du Plessis detailed how people can assist:
“Find a shoe box or any box. Then choose a pet you would like to help; a puppy, a kitten, a dog, or a cat. Then pack it full of the goodies for your chosen pet. Lastly, drop it off at one of our drop-off spots which can be found on www.mdzananda.co.za,” said du Plessis.
The number of pets who require medical assistance tends to rise at this time of the year, as animals in the area start to feel the effect of the icy cold temperatures.
“Most pets live outside. Many do have kennels, but there are also many who don’t. Hypothermia is always a concern if pets are outside in very cold and rainy weather,” said du Plessis.
Goods suggested to place in the boxes include Hills A/D tinned food for recovering pets, Milko Pup or Kitty Milk for bottle fed pups and kittens, soft food, pellet food, cat litter, a blanket, a hot water bottle or heating beanbag, automatic washing powder to wash blankets, a roll of black bags for daily disposal of dirty newspaper cage lining, leads, collars and dog jackets.
