Green Point man arrested for attack on boston terrier dog

Published on

A Green Point resident has been arrested and faces serious charges of animal cruelty after a harrowing video emerged showing him brutally beating a boston terrier.

In a statement by the Cape of Good Hope SPCA (SPCA), the one-minute and fifty-nine-second video begins with the terrified dog lying on a concrete floor. The man, using a wooden, bristled brush, is seen repeatedly striking the dog. The dog was also struck on his spine. A torn garbage bag and its spilled contents can be seen, suggesting the man’s possible motive for the violent assault.

The SPCA says the man hit the cowering dog for a total of 33 times before it managed to escape his and find refuge in its kennel.

“The man’s actions were not only inhumane but also a clear violation of the Animals Protection Act No. 71 of 1962. We are extremely thankful to the person who provided us with the evidence that enabled us to act swiftly and decisively today,” says Jaco Pieterse, chief inspector with the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

According to police spokesperson, Joseph Swartbooi, the incident occurred on 23 May 2024. After receiving the video, the SPCA says it launched an investigation and a suspect was arrested on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old suspect faces a charge of cruelty to animals, and is due to appear this week, says Swartbooi.

“The suspect is expected to make a court appearance in the Cape Town Central Magistrates’ court on Friday 07 June 2024 on the mentioned charge. We appeal to anyone with information that can assist in the investigation to please call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.”

SPCA spokesperson, Belinda Abraham, says the boston terrier named Waffles is safe and being showered with love. She urged the public to report any suspected cases of animal cruelty to ensure the protection and welfare of all animals.

“Community vigilance is one of our greatest assets in the fight against animal cruelty. We sincerely appreciate those who are brave enough to speak out for those who cannot speak for themselves.”
