Six fishermen missing at sea

Published on

A large-scale search is underway for six adult fishermen who are missing at sea.

The six men, believed to be from Hout Bay and Hawston, are on a rigid hull inflatable boat named “Berta Fishing Experience.”

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was alerted on Sunday morning by concerned family, colleagues, and friends of the fishermen, who were reported to be overdue.

Multiple agencies, including the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Transnet National Ports Authority Cape Town Port Control, and various NSRI stations, are involved in the search efforts.

The search area covers a vast expanse of ocean south and southwest of Cape Point, where the fishermen were believed to be fishing on Saturday afternoon and night.

Despite extensive efforts involving NSRI rescue craft, commercial fishing vessels, and recreational fishermen, no signs of the missing men or their boat have been found yet.

Telkom Maritime Radio Services have issued marine VHF radio broadcasts alerting vessels in the area to keep an eye out for any sightings.

Additionally, the ski-boat mobile and local boating communities are helping to spread the word and assist in the search.

Family members have opened missing persons cases, and our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.

The NSRI has commended all vessels involved in the search efforts and continue to keep hope alive as the extensive search operation remains ongoing.
