Another successful voter registration weekend

Published on

Voter registrations for the upcoming elections could surpass 28 million people, following the second successful voter registration drive this past weekend.

Provisional figures show over 1 million registrations this past weekend, as South Africans flocked to the more than 23 000 voting stations across the country.

Before this weekend, registrations had already exceeded 27 million for the first time ever. The official tally will be revealed on Tuesday.

The IEC’s Deputy CEO for Electoral Operations Masego Sheburi says those who missed this weekend’s registration drive still have an opportunity to do so online, or by visiting any of the IEC’s offices.

The opportunity to register to vote remains open until the date of the election is proclaimed by the President.

Sheburi also reminded voters that during this election, a person must vote at a voting station where they are registered.

If voters are not able to vote in their district on the day, they have to notify the commission. Details of the modalities of notification will be outlined soon.
