Cape Town has been named one of Time Out magazine’s best cities in the world.
The London-based magazine prides itself on being the “ultimate guide” to the attractions across the globe – and its recent article on “The 50 Best Cities in the World in 2024” describe Cape Town as having a “multicultural soul”.
The Mother City was ranked the second best city in the world, with its beautiful natural landscape, colourful showcase of South Africa’s history of apartheid, bustling creative spaces and welcoming atmosphere for the LGBTQ+ community.
“A whopping 100 percent of locals said the city is beautiful and that it made them happy, while Cape Town’s culture scene ranked highest in the world for its quality.”
The city lost the top spot to New York.

Cape Town mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, welcomed the news noting that its mention by Time Out will even further boost tourism in the city.
“This is good news because record tourism brings new jobs in our City of Cape Town, and that is always our primary goal. It takes a big Team Cape Town effort to offer tourists a world-class experience. Our city is clearly impressing visitors, who uniformly highlighted the beauty of our destination in responses to this global poll.”
He further noted that more investment will be put into making the city more attractive to visitors, ultimately resulting in greater opportunities for the city and its residents.
“[Plans] includes a record infrastructure investment pipeline, advanced plans for water and energy security, and growing our policing resources to keep making Cape Town safer.”
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, James Vos, adds that the city welcomed nearly three-million visitors in 2023 – an indication of bustling and growing tourism landscape in Cape Town.
“This industry is not just about attracting visitors; it’s about fostering an ecosystem that supports our local businesses and communities, driving forward our city’s prosperity.”
