Cape Town tourism sector soars

The City of Cape Town says the success of its travel and investment campaigns, is translating into tangible benefits for businesses and job creation in the city.

Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth, James Vos, says the number of incoming passengers via the Cape Town International Airport this summer, is just one indication of the tourism and investment opportunities available in the city.

Since the start of the 2023/24 holiday season period, roughly 31 000 were moving through the airport per day – with about 215 international flights landing in the city every week.

“Visitors – and especially returning visitors – don’t merely come to relax on our beaches and explore our mountains. They come to engage with our businesses and our communities, and immerse in the city’s rich history and cultures.”

Vos adds that another indication of the city’s tourism sector growth can be seen in the increase in cruise travel and conferences/events. Between October 2022 and May last year, just under 190 000 people were aboard cruise ships that docked in the city – with 50 cruises already having been confirmed for this year. Vos further added that many conference venues have been booked until year-end, which he says “will significantly benefit hotels and attractions, indicating a positive year ahead for the tourism sector”.

Tourism growth = job opportunities

With the “remarkable growth” seen in the tourism sector, Vos says various job opportunities can be made available. He says he would liked to see every household in the city benefit from success of the tourism sector.

“Through tourism, we can continue to empower communities economically while showcasing our city and sharing Cape Town’s rich, vibrant and authentic cultural and historical heritage with visitors. We’re excited to (re)welcome all visitors this tourism season.”
