The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is excited to announce that it has successfully obtained the broadcast rights for the Cricket World Cup 2023. This follows negotiations with Multichoice (SuperSport), the rights holder, for the sub-licensing of the Cricket World Cup 2023 free-to-air broadcasting rights.

Both the SABC and Multichoice have reached a mutually beneficial agreement that not only allows the SABC to fulfill its role as a public service broadcaster but also ensures that cricket enthusiasts across the country can enjoy the tournament.

The tournament will be available for free viewing on various SABC platforms, including SABC 3 (available on DSTV 193, DTT, Analogue), and can also be conveniently streamed online on sabcsport.com. Additionally, SABC Plus will carry the coverage, making it accessible to a wider audience.

The SABC will broadcast all South African games, including the semi-final, final and closing ceremony.

An Obstacle to Overcome

However, there is a small issue with the broadcasting plans. Multichoice has decided to restrict the broadcast of the Cricket World Cup 2023 on the OVHD (eMedia Platform). In response to this, the SABC has formally lodged a complaint with the Competition Commission regarding Multichoice’s behavior.

The broadcaster has proposed to eMedia a joint acquisition of the Cricket World Cup 2023 rights from Multichoice, which would have allowed all eMedia OVHD customers to enjoy the cricketing extravaganza. Unfortunately, eMedia has rejected this offer.
