An exclusive tour of the Sam Phillips Recording Studios

It doesn’t get better than this. If you want to talk about Memphis music royalty then you have to talk about the late, great Sam Phillips – the legendary producer who started Sun Records and Sun Studios.

He produced records for the likes of Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. In fact he is the man that discovered Elvis and brought him to the world.

Keeping the family name rocking

In 1969, Sam Phillips sold Sun to Shelby Singleton but his son has kept the family legacy alive. Jerry Phillips is a legendary musician and producer in his own right. Along with musician Scott Bomar he took us on an exclusive tour of the Sam Phillips Studios.

It was quite surreal to be in the space that saw the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison record their biggest pics. But the stories he had to tell us were just so special and knowing that they don’t offer tours in the studios, we knew we were getting an experience like no other for rock ‘n roll fans in Memphis. Listen to some of his stories about growing up around Elvis Presley and some of the wild stories from his studios:
