Sea Point drownings: City to check on warning signs

Published on

City of Cape Town officials will be asked to check on signage at Sea Point beaches after a local woman drowned on Tuesday, ward councillor Nicola Jowell has said.

Jowell said that the area had extensive signage warning beachgoers that the area is not safe for swimming and has a rip current. She added that the area was not designated for swimming due to the rip tides, strong swells and rocky conditions.

The area is not designated for swimming and there are no lifeguards posted to watch over those who take a stroll along the beach or the rocks.

Jowell said that the woman who had drowned was a local, who most likely visited the area regularly as part of a routine.

She added that there had been strong waves on Tuesday due to a full moon spring tide.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has already warned the public to be aware of a full moon spring tide over the next few days, which could cause high tides and stormy sea conditions.

The woman, who was identified as 49-year-old estate agent Laureen Leps, was swept into the ocean at Rocklands Beach in Sea Point on Tuesday. She died later in hospital.

It appeared that she had been walking on rocks along the shoreline when a wave swept her into the ocean.

The NSRI said she had been spotted around 200m off shore, before rescuers lost sight of her due to heavy sea swells and misty conditions. She was later found around 500m offshore in rough seas.

Rescue team members managed to revive her with CPR, before taking her to hospital in a critical condition.

In a public social media tribute, Leps’ husband Simon said a “massive hole” had been left in the family’s lives and he described his wife as “wonderful, kind, sweet, caring, [and] loving”.

He did not want to comment further, however, and requested privacy for the family to deal with their loss.

Bianca Shifrin, Lep’s sister, described the incident as a “freak drowning accident” in a social media post dedicated to her sister.

“We are all in shock and devastated. She will be so sorely missed, and her bright light will forever shine in our memories of her. Words can’t describe this unbearable pain,” she said.

“We will all keep her in our hearts and be strong for her boys.”

At the same time, the body of a man washed ashore, also at Rocklands beach, on Thursday.

He is believed to be of Somali descent.

Meanwhile, 9-year-old Moegamat Kamaar was swept out to sea at Sandy Bay, south of Llandudno, on Sunday.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon confirmed on Thursday that a search for Kamaar was still under way.
