Woman dies after being swept off rocks in Sea Point

Published on

UPDATE: Sadly, the woman who was swept off the rocks at Rocklands Beach yesterday has passed away in hospital. Hospital staff were able to locate her family, from a necklace she was wearing. The Sea Point mother died this morning, with her family at her side.

Earlier the National Sea Rescue Institute had called on the public to help identify the woman who suffered a near-drowning at Rocklands Beach, in Sea Point Tuesday.

It’s believed the woman was walking on rocks on the shoreline when she may have been swept into the ocean by a wave. She was rescued and transported to hospital, where she was in a critical condition.

She sadly passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

At the same time, authorities are continuing their search for a 9-year-old boy who disappeared at Sandy Bay, at the weekend.

“It appears that the child, from Hout Bay, was with friends and relatives and they had gone to Sandy Bay. While standing on a rock on the shoreline a wave reportedly swept the child off the rocks into the sea. Police divers are continuing in an ongoing search. Thoughts are with the family and friends of the missing child in this difficult time,” adds Lambinon.

Furthermore, the NSRI has requested that people be mindful of the full moon Spring tide that causes higher than normal high tides and lower than normal low tides. In winter, storm sea conditions can increase shoreline risks during the full moon and new moon Spring tides. This full moon Spring is expected to last into the next few days.
