Lucien Williams, recently trekked from the DHL Stadium, in the Mother City to George in the Southern Cape. This was done in a bid to raise funds in order to pay off his wife, Washiela’s student debt.

She had been studying education at UNISA but required around R30 000 to settle her student debt. The money was raised within 4 days of her determined husband, broadcasting his plans to walk for the money. At the time, he was desperate to find a solution to quell their money troubles. He says God spoke to him and gave him the idea one day, while he was out on a walk.

CHALLENGES EN ROUTE

The Parow West man started walking on 23 March. He concluded his trip on 1 April, as scheduled. While his journey turned into a spiritual and humbling experience, he also encountered challenges:

“After day 3 or 4, I started getting blisters on my feet. So of all the things I did not pack, it was foot cream and sunscreen. Those were the 2 things that bothered me the most at the end of the trip,” says Williams.

THE NEXT WALK IN 2-3 MONTHS

Although Williams’ feet are currently still recovering from his recent lengthy trip, he’s now already planning a second stint. This time around, he plans to walk from the DHL Stadium, in Cape Town all the way to the Namibian border.

“I told my wife, it’s exactly 1 000 km from Cape Town Stadium, to the Namibian border. So I was like “a 1000 km, that sounds nice!” but she said I need to wait until my legs recover. I told her not now, but I have to do it in Winter because of the Namib Desert, so I told her 2-3 months is more than enough time to prepare, and she just gave me one of those looks like the wives give,” says the avid walker.

A date for when the will embark on his new journey is yet to be confirmed.
