So far, this has been one big year for Netflix. We got Lockwood and Co., the mind-tripping Kaleidoscope, Physical 100 and You Season 4. And now, a new proudly South African crime series is about to dominate your screens.

Unseen just dropped on Netflix and was shot right here in Cape Town! This six-episode thriller released on March 29 and stars Gail Mabalane in the leading role.

The series is brought to your by the team behind Blood & Water, Travis Taute and Daryne Joshua. And if you’re a fan of B+W, you will remember Mabalane for her exceptional performance as Thandeka Khumalo in Blood & Water.

What is Unseen about

It follows the journey of an ‘ordinary’ domestic worker (Mabalane) who goes searching for her missing husband. This local thriller puts a South African spin on a Turkish Series, Fatma, released in 2021. Özgür Önurme directed the film, and it got rave reviews.

This series is different in that it shows the dynamics and (hidden) realities of the township and affluent suburbs.

Mabalane plays Zenzi Mwale, the maid hiding-in-plain-sight. The helper goes through the motions as a wife on a quest to find her husband, Maxwell Mwale (Vuyo Dabulawho), who disappears after his release from prison. But her search is not a smooth one, dotted with corrupt officials and gangsters. And Zenzi soon becomes the danger that lurks in plain sight, almost unseen.
