Aid from across the globe is flowing in to Syria and Turkey following deadly earthquakes on Monday. The death toll has risen to nearly 8,400. At the time of publishing, the number of confirmed deaths in Syria stands at 2470. The death toll in Turkey remains at 5,894.
A number of factors are hampering relief efforts in both countries. In Syria, the scars of 12 years of brutal war is evident in the wake of the tremors. The country is beset by food shortages, conflict and a recent cholera outbreak. The crumbling infrastructure leaves authorities unprepared to deal with the aftermath of the earthquakes.
This was case even before the earthquakes hit the region.

In Turkey, anger is increasing with emergency efforts from authorities being described as ‘inadequate’.The cold is adding to the challenge. Rescuers are working through freezing conditions to search the rubble of buildings and roads for any survivors.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake on Monday – followed by a second earthquake almost as powerful – toppled high-rise buildings and injuring tens of thousands of people. On average, there are fewer than 20 quakes over a 7.0 magnitude in any year. This makes Monday’s disaster a severe event.
International aid to Turkey and Syria
Rescue efforts are ongoing, thus the death toll is expected to rise. Global powers have rushed to send aid to earthquake-hit Turkey and Syria.
Here is a breakdown of the international aid promised to Turkey and Syria:
South Korea
It is dispatching 110 workers to assist in search and rescue efforts . According to Yonhap news agency, the team comprises of 60 members from the Korea Disaster Relief group and 50 military personnel.
Seoul has pledged 5 million dollars in emergency humanitarian assistance to Turkey.

China
The first batch of its 40 million yuan emergency assistance was sent to Turkey. China also promises to dispatch rescue teams to provide assistance in Syria. According to CCTV, the team comprises of 82 members, who brought 20 tonnes of medical supplies and other equipment. Four search-and-rescue dogs accompany the team.
The UK
76 search-and-rescue specialists were sent along with dogs and equipment to Turkey. An emergency medical team accompanies them too. The UK says it is also in contact with the UN about getting aid to Syria.
The US
It is sending two 79-person teams to assist with rescue efforts in Turkey. Nearly 100 Los Angeles County firefighters and structural engineers will be sent to Turkey.
The European Union
Teams were mobilised to help Turkey. The Copernicus satellite system was activated to provide emergency mapping services. The EU says it is ready to offer help to Syria via its humanitarian assistance programmes.
At least 13 member countries offered assistance.
Russia
Rescue teams will fly to earthquake-struck Syria. The Russian military in the country have sent 10 units, of 300 people, to help clear debris and search for survivors. Its military will also distribute humanitarian aid. Turkey accepted an offer of support from Russia.
