South Africa’s new coins designs gazetted

South Africans will awake to new minted coins next year. The South African Reserve Bank gazetted the new designs for the 2023 Fourth Decimal Coin Series, and it will become legal tender from January 1st, next year.

A notable change is that the words ‘South Africa’ will be included on one side of the coins and printed in all the official languages. The coins will be minted on a rotational bases, with use of all the languages being used over the next ten years.

The new series was announced in August, and the new dimensions and designs were green-lit.

Here are the new designs:

The number of languages will be used as follows:

R1 – one language

R2, 50c, 10c – two languages

R5 – three languages

Along with the use of the languages, changes to some of the animal features will also be included.
