Golden oldies ‘not out’ at annual Golden Games

Published on

The City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department hosted its annual Golden Games for seniors at the Green Point Track yesterday.

Hundreds of older residents participated in the event, also known as the Seniors Olympics.

The event is aimed at empowering the elderly and encouraging them to keep physically active and healthy.

Almost a hundred seniors from Hangberg, Imizamo Yethu, Woodstock and Bo-Kaap, participated in a variety of events including relays, egg and spoon races, bowling, netball and many more.

‘Our older residents play an important role in our communities as they bring wisdom, experience and calm. They are also one of the vulnerable groups and are often neglected or forgotten. Our senior clubs give them the opportunity to interact socially with their peers and enjoy recreational activities to keep them healthy and alert,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia van der Ross.

The highlights of the day was a freestyle dance competition, which brought about much fun and laughter as the seniors cheered each other on.

At 82 years old, Ms Juliana Opperman from Hangberg was the oldest participant at the Golden Games, proving that one can maintain a healthy mind and body at any age.
