Western Cape police have warned consumers to be careful when using social media platforms, like Facebook’s Marketplace, to advertise items after well-known business owner Ben Tuzee was murdered last week.

Tuzee, who was the co-owner of Dixies Restaurant & Bar in Glencairn, had been en route to Philippi with his niece, Kaele Lombard, to deliver a TV. Kaele had sold the TV on Marketplace and was asked to deliver it to the buyer.

But Nyanga detectives say they were lured to Browns Farm.

Upon their arrival at the agreed location, Tuzee and his niece came under attack by three suspects, who fled with his vehicle after he sustained a fatal stab wound.

Tuzee’s nice survived the incident and was unharmed, while the stolen vehicle was later recovered not far from the crime scene.

Three suspects have since been arrested.

Police have warned Tuzee’s murder is not regarded as an isolated incident as they are aware of more incidents where victims who made use of social media platforms to advertise items fell victim after they were requested to make the delivery to areas in Nyanga such as Browns Farm and Crossroads.

Members of the public are urged to avoid making a delivery to an area that is unfamiliar to them, especially one with higher levels of crime.

The modus operandi appears to be one where criminals use their interest in an advertised item on social media platforms such as Market Place as a decoy to perpetrate a robbery or other serious and violent crime, by luring their victim to come to them.

Sellers should instead meet potential buyers at a public place which is regarded safe and familiar to the seller.

Western Cape police say vigilance will prevent people from falling victim.

Meanwhile, at Dixies, on Saturday September 17, at 4pm, there will be a celebration of his life.
