The NeverEnding story might be given a reboot

Published on

One of the most iconic 80s films (ok, they were ALL iconic) is The NeverEnding Story. We were all enthralled and captivated by the mystical creatures, and it created a generation of humans who are phobic of quicksand because of Atreyu’s horse Artax’s untimely demise in the mud scene. (I know, I know – DON’T REMIND ME, THAT WAS THE SADDEST SCENE IN CINEMATIC HISTORY! Leo not fitting on the floating door in Titanic pales in comparison.)

A moment’s silence for Artax, and now we move on.

Are we ready for the remake? Well it seems a bidding war was afoot for the novel on which the 1984 original was based, so it’s very likely that we will be getting one soon. And if the buzz is to be believed, 2024 is the moment.

How will the classic creatures fare in the world of CGI and advanced makeup artistry? Moreover, is a new generation of children ready to be traumatised by the horse scene (in 4K HD nogal!?)

The original movie was only half the book, so maybe a longer more in depth look at the entire tale is just the escape we deserve…So I say we should get a series! (but, again Disney – can we have the horse survive this time?! Please.)

And the only cast member who’s been announced is our very own, homegrown Charlize Theron!

Here’s what RottenTomatoes had to report:

“The nostalgia for The NeverEnding Story appears to be culminating in a bidding war among several unnamed studios and streamers in both the USA and Europe. The rights being sought are for the original 1979 fantasy novel by German author Michael Ende, which in its original publication was titled Die Unendliche Geschichte. The 1984 film only adapted the first half of the book, with the second half being adapted six years later as The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (Rotten at 14%), so the rights to Ende’s novel could easily be expanded to at least two films, if not more (it is, after all, neverending). In the past, a reboot of has reportedly been considered by Warner Bros. (which distributed the original film in the U.S.), Star Wars franchise producer Kathleen Kennedy, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way. It’s not known if any of these are currently among those pursuing The NeverEnding Story.”

For nostalgia’s sake, here’s the old trailer. It still holds up!

Are you looking forward to a potential reboot, or do you think we should leave well-enough alone?
