“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
These were the words uttered by NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong, when he first stepped foot on the Moon, on this day, 20 July 1969.
The astronaut, along with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins embarked on a lunar journey under the Apollo 11 mission a few days earlier on 16 July.
The achievement came a little over eight years since the flights of Gagarin and Shepard, followed quickly by President Kennedy’s challenge to put a man on the moon before the decade is out.
An estimated 650 million viewers worldwide watched the first steps on the Moon.
