Coming Soon: Wordle the board game

Published on

The online word game sensation, Wordle is being turned into a board game.

CNN reports that Hasbro and The New York Times have teamed up to turn the online game into a board game version.

“Hasbro approached the New York Times to make a party game after noticing how popular Wordle had become online, according to Hasbro Gaming’s Senior Vice President and General Manager Adam Biehl. What sparked our interest was … how much fun people were having posting the results on social media,” Biehl said in an exclusive interview with CNN Business. “That’s when we knew that there was something special about it.” CNN

Little is yet known about exactly what the rules of the game will be but it’s reported that Wordle: The Party Game would retain the hallmark of Wordle’s game play, which gives players six chances to guess a five-letter word with the help of some color-coded clues.

American software engineer, Josh Wardle created Wordle, first as a game for his close friends and family to enjoy and released it for the public in October 2021. A few months later The New York Times bought the rights to the game and promised fans that it would remain free to play and enjoy.

Earlier this year, the CEO of The New York Times Meredith Kopit Levien says the game has boosted there online numbers: “Wordle brought an unprecedented tens of millions of new users to the Times, many of whom stayed to play other games which drove our best quarter ever for net subscriber additions to Games”

Since adding Wordle to their online games, The New York Times said it added 387,000 net digital subscribers in the quarter and now has 9.1 million total subscribers.

Fans can expect World: The Party Game to launch for pre-orders on 1 October at an estimated $19.99 (R340).
