Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has called on Capetonians to get counted as the Census has been extended for locals, until the 30th of April.
Hill-Lewis says if Census underreports the population of the Western Cape and by extension the City of Cape Town, national budget allocations will be misaligned to the real population figures, and insufficient to meet the needs of residents in terms of access to basic services.

About the Census:
- The Census is a benchmark count of the entire population of South Africa.
- Information is collected from each member in every household, including details such as births and deaths, education, occupation, housing, access to services and assets.
- Census data provides the basis of most social and population data produced by Stats SA and other organisations.
- It provides granular data to inform policy, planning, evaluation and fiscal allocations.
- It ensures that the City of Cape Town gets its fair share of budget allocations from the National Government.
