I don’t know about you, but for me, the 2022 Formula One season can’t come soon enough. Weekends just aren’t the same in my house without the excitement of F1. While we have to wait patiently for the Bahrain Grand Prix to kick off the season on the 20th of March, I thought I’d whet your appetite by sharing my Formula One predictions in 2022.

Last year’s season will be remembered as one of the best of all time. The epic battle between Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is the stuff of legend and what we all love to see. My first prediction is that Max will come back more confident and stronger than ever this year and we’ll see him go head to head with Lewis yet again.

The second prediction that I’m making (albeit with a heavy heart) is that this will be Sebastian Vettel’s last season. He is one of my favourite drivers – so much so that my husband and I named our son after him – and it would be sad to see him go, but at 34, the four-time World Champion could well hang up his racing boots when his contract at Aston Martin expires at the end of the year.  Technically, he could sign an extension, but given that Aston Martin fell to seventh last season, he might bow out to spend more time with his family.

Thirdly, George Russell will shine at Mercedes.  George’s move from Williams to Mercedes is well deserved and I can’t wait to see how he performs in the car. He proved himself standing in for Lewis in Bahrain in 2020 and I think he’s going to settle into the team immediately and drive the heck out of that car. Who knows, he might even make things difficult for Lewis which is never a bad thing.

Those are my predictions for what could happen in 2022. Tune in to Smile Breakfast for more Formula One pre-season content.
