Vaccine demand in the Western Cape has shown early signs of an increase, following the discovery of the Omicron variant.

Western Cape head of health, Dr Keith Cloete says more than 20 000 jabs were administered in the province on Monday and Tuesday each, placing it back on target for daily vaccine distribution.

Cloete added that the province’s current covid-19 reproduction number is the highest it has ever been. This number indicates how many people a covid-19 positive person can infect when they have an active form of the virus. Cloete says during previous waves, this number has always hovered around one but now stands at an alarming two.

The CTICC Vaccination Site closes its doors officially today having vaccinated just over 136 000 people. Provincial Health’s Dr Saadiq Kariem says the mass vaccination site was open for five months and was a public-private partnership between Western Cape Health and the Discovery Group.
