President Cyril Ramaphosa says freedom is within reach and further lockdowns can be prevented this December, if all citizens get vaccinated against the coronavirus.

Last night he moved the country to Adjusted Level 1 of the lockdown, which primarily allows for bigger gatherings to take place indoors and outdoors.

But Ramaphosa says all health protocols still need to be followed, and vaccination is the key out of this pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Vooma Vaccination drive has kicked off today and Ramaphosa has urged everyone to go out and get their jab.

The Vooma Vaccination Weekend has a target of vaccinating 30 000 people in Cape Town and a total of half a million people in South Africa from today until Sunday.

In his address to the nation President Cyril Ramaphosa said he would also be out on the frontline.

Under the Adjusted Level 1 lockdown rules the hours of curfew will be between midnight to 04:00. Non-essential establishments will need to close by 23:00 to allow staff and patrons to travel home.

The maximum number of people allowed to gather indoors increases from 250 to 750. Outdoors 2000 people are allowed to gather. Where the venue is too small, only 50% of its capacity is allowed.

100 people are now allowed to attend a funeral, up from 50. Night vigils and after funeral gatherings are still not allowed.

Alcohol sales will be allowed as per an establishment’s licencing conditions, but no alcohol can be sold after 23:00. Masks remain mandatory, and it’s a criminal offence not to wear one in public.
