Members of the public in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have been left to scrounge for basic goods, with the ongoing riots and looting having stripped several supermarkets of produce.

The situation is compounded by deliveries not being made.
Meanwhile, the people of Howick in KZN have wasted no time in starting to clean up their town. It started with about five of them cleaning a street and then they were joined by other residents.

In Tembisa, residents from Birch Acres banded together with the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department to protect their community from looters. Community members were wearing reflective clothing and were armed with traditional weapons. The group, which numbered in the hundreds, took it upon themselves to protect Birch Acres Mall.

Locally, up to 8 000 law enforcement officers will be deployed across the Western Cape should any looting or protesting flare up here. Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz yesterday outlined the province’s safety-response plan.
