Tributes are still pouring in for much-loved medical doctor and radio host Sindi van Zyl who over the weekend lost her battle against Covid-19. The 45-year-old has been on a ventilator for a while, with her condition having sparked a public outpouring of support. She touched many lives to such an extent that South Africans contributed more than a-million-RAND to a fund-raising campaign to settle her mounting medical bills. She is survived by her husband Marinus and their children Nandi and Manie.

The minister of health, Dr. Zweli Mkhize says another 931 new cases of the coronavirus have been reported over the the latest 24-hour monitoring period. At the same time, 66 people have died of the respiratory illness, taking the death toll to 53 322. At the moment, there are more than 21 000 active cases of the virus in the country, of which more than 5 000 are in Kwa-Zulu-Natal followed by the Western Cape, with more than 4 900 cases.

The Head of Health in the Western Cape, Dr Keith Cloete says the province is continuing to monitor waste-water systems – for any sign of Covid-19 outbreaks in com-mu-ni-ties. The initiative is being led by the Medical Research Council, in collaboration with municipalities. Cloete says the province is in what he calls ‘containment mode’ – with teams on high alert for any possible sign of cluster outbreaks. He says in the Metro alone, 15 waste water treatment plants are being monitored.
