Listen: W.C. ready for fire-season

Published on

The Western Cape Department of Local Government and Environmental Affairs says it is already preparing for the upcoming fire season, saying resources have been allocated to help fight this seasonal hazard.

The province has received above-average rainfalls this winter season, which has seen dam levels increase to their highest in years but has also lead to good growth in vegetation, which serves as fuel for wild-fires.

Spokes-person for MEC Anton Bredell, James-Brent Styan, urges residents to help prevent and fight bush-fires this year.

This past weekend, the City’s Fire and Rescue service had to deal with its first major veld-fire, after a blaze on the slopes of Table Mountain, that was only contained on Sunday morning.

Styan says strong berg-winds during the hot summer months help fan the veld-fires.
