A 72-hour tracking operation was launched in KZN last night, following a mass shooting south of Durban, which saw 11 people killed and 3 others wounded.

The manhunt was undertaken at the instruction of the acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane. She, last night, directed the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner to immediately activate the 72-hour tracking operation to pursue and apprehend the suspects responsible for the fatal shootings in KwaMakhutha, south of Durban.
“Police must act decisively, mobilise all available resources and pursue those responsible until they are brought before the courts,” said Dimpane.

According to SAPS’ Head of Communications, Major-General Nonkululeko Phokane, armed suspects had reportedly entered a house in the Ziko area on Tuesday night, 22 September 2026, and opened fire on the people who were gathered inside.
“We are confident that investigators are following a promising lead which could assist in securing a breakthrough in this case,” Dimpane added.

Meanwhile, the acting National Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, said she’s concerned over the senseless loss of life. At the same time, she conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased. Dimpane also wishes those who were injured a speedy recovery.
“The motive for the shooting has not yet been established, and investigations are continuing.”
