62 people killed in 56 road accidents in the Western Cape

Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says there has been a worrying increase in deadly road accidents since the start of December.

The mid-season festive road safety statistics show that 56 deadly crashes were recorded, which resulted in the deaths of 62 people. Nationally, more than 500 people have died during the same period. The majority of these road users were pedestrians, followed by passengers, drivers and cyclists.

“The statistics are a stark reminder of the consequences of reckless and negligent road behaviour. As we anticipate increased traffic volumes over the next two weeks, I appeal to residents and visitors in the Western Cape to adhere to traffic laws and exercise patience and caution on the roads. Together, we can ensure that everyone arrives safely at their destinations,” said Sileku.
