3 killed, 7 injured: Gang violence escalates in Overcome Heights

Cape Town police have increased their presence in Overcome Heights following deadly shooting incidents last week.

 

In the most recent incident reported on Saturday, two men were shot and killed when gunmen opened fire on them and three others. A woman and two men, who sustained gunshot wounds, were transported to medical facility in the area after the incident.

 

“Police members responded to a complaint of a shooting and upon arrival on the scene they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies,” said Western Cape police spokesperson, Wesley Twigg.

 

Two counts of murder and three of attempted murder are being investigated, though Twigg said the motive for the attack remains unclear.

 

Just days prior, on Tuesday, 25 March, a 21-year-old man was fatally shot, and four others were wounded in a gang-related shooting incident in the same neighbourhood.

 

“The 21-year-old victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the other victims were taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang related,” Twigg said.

 

Police have yet to make any arrests in connection with either attack.

 

According to reports, the recent shooting incidents in Overcome Heights are allegedly linked to feuds in the taxi industry. It is also said to be spilling over into surrounding areas.

 

Twigg said Muizenberg police are actively investigating the shootings.

 

“Police deployments have been bolstered with the Anti-Gang Unit and other law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation and to maintain law and order. The deployments will focus on high density operations and visibility in order to restore calm to the area,” noted Twigg.
