26,2 million South Africans on the voters’ roll so far

Published on

The Independent Electoral Commission says of the country’s 62 million residents, 26.2 million are currently on the voters’ roll. The latest figures pertaining to the upcoming general elections were revealed during the IEC’s campaign launch for the 2024 elections.

23 269 voting stations have been established. The 2024 general election marks 30 years since the dawn of democracy. The campaign theme is: “Your democracy. Own it.”

The commission’s CEO Sy Mamabolo says the majority of voters are women:

“Currently the voter’s roll stands at 26.2 million people. Of this, 95% have a complete address recorded against their name. Women have a greater representation on the voter’s roll at 14.4 million against men whose representation is 11.6 million.”

Mamabolo adds the 30 to 39 cohort of South Africans account for the highest number of voters:

“The age category with the highest representation is 30 – 39, with 6.6 million voters. That is followed by the age category 40 – 49, at 5.8 million, and the age category 50 – 59, at 4.4 million.”

The first voter registration weekend will take place on the 18th and 19th of November.

“We urge all South Africans to use our online portal, to register, to check and update their details, and to participate actively in this pivotal democratic process, otherwise we urge citizens to visit voting stations on the 18th and 19th of November.”
