140 kg of cocaine valued at R84 million seized in Cape Town

Cape Town police have seized 140 kilograms of cocaine, worth an estimated 84 million rand.

 

On Tuesday, Bishop Lavis police detectives responded to a tip-off regarding a possible drug consignment, at a business, located in Airport Industria.

 

The Police’s Malcolm Pojie explains what ensued:

 

“SAPS members, with the assistance of Metro Police and Law Enforcement pounced on the premises on Tuesday, 18 April 2023 and ensued with a search of a container when they discovered 16 boxes containing 140 sealed bricks of cocaine with an estimated value of R84 million. The members seized the find weighing approximately 140kg and booked it in as evidence, ” says Pojie.

He adds an enquiry docket has been opened, with no arrests at this stage. However, the Provincial Detective’s Organised Crime, Narcotics Section has been assigned to investigation the circumstances and possible origin, and destination of the narcotics.

 

Furthermore, the City of Cape Town’s Metro Police unit says one of it’s K9 officers, Khalesi, assisted in the operation. Spokesperson Ruth Solomons says the sniffer dog was a huge help:

 

“On their arrival, they were informed that a container, filled with poultry boxes, looked suspicious. After inspecting the container, Metro Police K9 members were activated and K9 Khalesi gave a positive indication of the presence of drugs (cocaine), ” says Solomons.

It was at this point, that the scene was then handed over to the SAPS.

 

The investigation remains underway.
