Mitchells Plain police are investigating a murder case following a fatal shooting incident of a 12-year-old at a school in Khayalami Street, Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain on Tuesday.

According to reports, a 12-year-old girl grade 7 learner was caught in a crossfire between rival gangs and was shot and killed by a stray bullet.

The victim was declared deceased on the scene by the medical personnel. The unknown suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested.

Following the incident, residents of Beacon Valley have called on police to increase visibility at schools in the area – to ensure the safety of learners. Angry community members have threatened to keep their kids out of school until more police visibility is seen surrounding schools.

Ward councillor, Solomon Philander, has called on the community to allow the South African Police Services to investigate and bring the perpetrators of crime to book.

“I want to appeal to the community if there’s any information leading to the rest of the shooters, let us work together to get them to book.”

Philander and MEC of police oversight and community safety, Reagan Allen, have activated Law Enforcement officers to Beacon Valley.

“I want to say thank you to our enabled neighbourhood watch in the community who was really on-site to assist with managing the scene.” – Cllr Philander

Meanwhile, MEC Reagan Allen is on a mission to establish where the firearms and ammunition used in the gang violence come from. He has therefore reminded residents that they can earn up to R5000 when they report the whereabouts or suppliers of any illegal firearms.

“These barbaric individuals must be caught. I call on our community to immediately come forward with information so that the perpetrators can be arrested.”

Anyone with any information about this fatal shooting incident is kindly requested to contact the investigating officer of Anti-Gang Unit, Detective Sergeant Bradley Schuurman. 071 673 3841 or alternatively call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
