The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is highlighting food insecurity on campus, culminating in a food packing event on the Bellville Main Campus on Wednesday 16 October, to mark World Food Day.

A substantial portion of the UWC student population comes from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and many rely on financial aid, which often proves insufficient to cover all living expenses, including food. This issue at UWC reflects a broader challenge faced by many students at other South African universities.

The month-long campaign is endorsed by Mama Leah Tutu and the Desmond Tutu IP Trust and supported by Shoprite/Checkers, The FIX ,Tiger Brands and the Gift of The Givers Foundation.

The primary beneficiary is the UWC Food Bank, which addresses student hunger on campus by providing essential food items as part of a grocery pack to support students through their studies – in a discreet and dignified manner.

In a statement, the university says the UWC Food Bank is an essential resource for those experiencing food shortages.

“It serves as a crucial safety net, allowing students to focus on their education without the constant stress of not knowing where their next meal will come from. The initiative is part of broader efforts by UWC to ensure that every student has access to basic resources that are fundamental to their academic success and well-being.”

This outreach initiative is part of UDubs Cares, which was launched earlier this year on International Women’s Day, with its first act being the provision of sanitary pads to students.

Director of Institutional Advancement, Prof Anesh Singh, said:

“Social responsibility is not solely the duty of the wealthy or large corporations; it rests upon each of us. I urge you to give generously and selflessly as we nurture the leaders of tomorrow.”

Mama Leah Tutu said this is an initiative that is very close to her heart:

“It is said that you cannot teach a hungry child, and you cannot teach a hungry university student either. Hunger in the UWC community is a sad reality, and I am committed to helping ensure no one faces such hardship. I urge staff, students, alumni and businesses to support the student food bank. Your contributions, whether food or financial, will make a meaningful difference.”

The UWC Food Campaign started on 1 October and donations can be made until the end of October.

Boxes have been placed around campus where students and staff can leave non-perishable items in support of the campaign.
