University of KwaZulu-Natal geneticist Professor Tulio de Oliveira has on Twitter called on the world not to isolate South Africa and the continent for raising the alarm about the new variant of concern.

De Oliveira, who is also the director of the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (Krisp), has requested that global financial organisations and billionaires, like Elon Musk, help to support SA and Africa, in efforts to manage and extinguish variants.
