Two suspected extortionists have been killed in a shoot-out with Police in Cape Town. Officers say another suspect was seriously wounded in the incident, along the N1 near Milnerton, yesterday. Police Spokesperson, Malcolm Pojie says members were pursuing a hijacked vehicle when they were fired on near the Sable Road exit. He says officers returned fire.

The identities of the deceased are at this stage, unknown. Lt Col Malcolm Pojie says three firearms were seized from the vehicle after the shootout. He says preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle the suspects were travelling in, had been hijacked in Thornton a couple of days ago.

Officers affiliated with the Provincial Organised Crime Unit are investigating charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a hijacked vehicle. At the same time, members of the Police Watchdog, IPID have also launched a probe. The identities of the deceased individuals have also not been established yet.

Pojie says Police crime scene experts were still scouring a crime scene Tuesday afternoon, where two suspected extortionists were shot and killed. Another one sustained a serious wound, in a shootout with police.

He says, “Reports indicate that a dedicated team of police officials with intelligence on suspects who were alleged to have extorted businesses, followed a vehicle with three occupants. Upon realising that police were following them, the suspects fired shots at the police.”

Pojie concluded, “A shootout along the N1 near the Sable Road off-ramp ensued, resulting in two fatalities and one suspect seriously wounded. He was subsequently taken to a medical facility for treatment.”
