Two arrests after Khayelitsha barber shop shooting

Published on

Western Cape police have not ruled out the possibility that more charges could be added to the charge sheet of two men, arrested in connection with the deadly barber shop shooting in Khayelitsha over the weekend.

The duo, aged 24 and 28, faces four counts of murder and nine of attempted murder, after they allegedly opened fire on the barber shop in Site C on Saturday afternoon.

Among the victims are three children.

The police’s Brigadier Novella Potelwa says the Provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives  charged the two suspects on Tuesday.

The suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s court on Friday.

She says in addition to more charges against the suspects, they have also not ruled out the possibility of more arrests.

Three children aged five, 11 and 12 as well as a 30 year old men died from the shooting and seven others were seriously injured. Two other individuals were unharmed.

Meanwhile, investigations into another multiple murder shooting incident that occurred in Nyanga on Sunday continue and no arrests have been made yet.

The Western Cape MEC of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen has hailed the arrests as a significant breakthrough.

‘These suspects must now come clean so that we can have full insight into this heinous crime and so that whoever else might be involved can also face the consequences. This, or any other crime will never be welcomed in any of our communities. This is the type of policing we require on a consistent basis, as it’s a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when SAPS utilise their intelligence optimally. Those with any further information are encouraged to make it available to all law enforcement agencies, so that when this matter appears in court, prosecutors will have a watertight case. We need to ensure that these suspects are convicted. As the Western Cape Government, we will continue to support SAPS’ efforts with the deployment of our LEAP officers in areas where the murder rate is highest.’
