The Zondo commission has slammed former president Jacob Zuma's announcement that he will not obey a summons to appear before the state capture inquiry. The commission says this act shows that Zuma considers himself to be "above the law and the Constitution". The secretary of the commission has been instructed to lay a criminal complaint against Zuma for not appearing from 18 to 22 January.

The Maitland Crematorium says over the past 3 weeks, it has recorded its highest number of cremations since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, reaching up to 250 per week. The demand for cremations is almost 3 times more than before the pandemic. The City of Cape Town says this has been consistently high since the beginning of the second wave. The facility will remain operating at maximum capacity for about 3 more weeks.

Alleged gang leader William “Red” Stevens has been shot and killed outside his home in Kraaifontein, in an apparent hit. While the police did not name him, his identity has been confirmed to News24 by several sources. Stevens, alleged to be the leader of the 27s gang, was murdered outside his home in Rembrandt Street.
