Cancer Buddies

Published on

Cancer Buddies is the peer-to-peer support project of People Living with Cancer (PLWC). It was established in 2002 by Carl Liebenberg and Linda Greeff, both of whom are cancer survivors. This volunteer support project is aligned with international protocols, and is now one of the most established volunteer psycho-social projects in the country. The buddy support network allows cancer patients to interact with and receive advice and support from cancer survivors who have a similar profile, disease and treatment protocol.
Cancer Buddies has established branches in the Western Cape, Pretoria Johannesburg and George. All our volunteers and caregivers are cancer survivors and have been through the cancer journey themselves. Our aim is to provide support to newly diagnosed cancer patients when treatment starts, to assist with the initial adjustment to the process. This service ensures that cancer patients and their caregivers have access to support services near their treatment units.
Cancer Buddies aims to develop a national support network for those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Assistance is provided to cancer patients and their families individually or within groups, in dealing with:

  • their diagnosis and treatment;
  • emotional and psychological issues;
  • legal and social issues;
  • living with and beyond the treatment of cancer.

Should you, a friend or a family member have been diagnosed with cancer and have the need to talk to others who have been in the same position; have any questions or concerns; or would like to attend one of our general support group meetings please call the tollfree helpline 0800 033 337 or email us at info@plwc.org.za
In addition Cancer Buddies have launched a tollfree helpline – 0800 033 337 which is available nationwide. To fund this line they have a fundraising project – selling leather Lend-Your-Hand bracelets.
