President Cyril Ramaphosa is considering appointing a career police officer as the next chief of the beleaguered SAPS.

The Presidency last month announced that top cop Khehla Sitole has agreed to the early termination of his contract for the benefit of the country. This effectively negates a board of inquiry into his fitness to hold office, but his axing ensures that his name is added to a string of police commissioners tainted by scandal, which stretches back more than a decade.
