PICS: Progress to get the Central Line fully operational

Published on

The CEO of PRASA Rail, Nelson Malefane, along with the Western Cape Rail management and technical teams, conducted a site visit to the Central Line, including Nolungile, Nonkqubela, and Kapteinsklip stations, this week.

The purpose of the visit was to assess the progress made thus far in extending services on the Central Line.

The Central Line was completely closed in October 2019, and with no security on site, equipment was stolen and vandalised, while hundreds of people built homes on the track during the Covid-19 lockdown.

There was a process to clear homes off the tracks and find alternative accommodation for the residents, while a partial service has since been restored.

PRASA Group CEO Hishaam Emeran paid a visit to the Nolungile section of the Central Line earlier in February to see the progress that has been made.

The latest goal was to have the Central Line completely operational by March 2025, after several delays were experienced last year.
