New Barbie movie causes pink paint shortage

Published on

In a shocking turn of events, the world is reportedly facing a shortage of pink paint, and it seems that Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Barbie film is partly to blame. The production of this plastic doll biopic required such an excessive amount of bright pink paint that it completely depleted the global supply of one paint company.

Renowned film director, Greta Gerwig – best known for work in Little Women and Ladybird – recently revealed the production details to Architectural Digest about the creation of the bubblegum-hued set for Barbie’s Dreamhouse.

Gerwig expressed her vision, stating, “I wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much.” As a result, the film’s demanding production caused a shortage of pink worldwide.

Rosco, the company responsible for producing this specific shade of fluorescent pink, confirmed that the film completely wiped out their entire supply.

This not only impacted the company’s ability to meet the film’s demand but also aggravated pre-existing supply chain issues stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic and destructive winter weather that damaged essential paint-making materials.

The vice president of global marketing at Rosco, Lauren Proud clarified that while the supply shortage had already occurred, the production team’s requirements further exacerbated the situation. She asserted, “There was this shortage, and then we gave them everything we could”. Nevertheless, she acknowledged, saying “They did clean us out on paint.”

‘Life’s fantastic when you’re plastic’

Despite the global pink paint crisis, the dedicated crew managed to secure just enough paint to complete the bubblegum-hued set for production. Most of the filming took place at Warner Bros Studios where the vibrant world of Barbie’s Dreamhouse came to life.

The scarcity of pink paint caused by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film has left the entertainment industry and enthusiasts astounded.
